The contents of this, as of the other volumes in the series, have been drawn from Schopenhauer's Parerga, and amongst the various subjects dealt with in that famous collection of essays, Literature holds an important place. Nor can Schopenhauer's opinions fail to be of special value when he treats of literary form and method. For, quite apart from his philosophical pretensions, he claims recognition as a great writer; he is, indeed, one of the best of the few really excellent prose-writers of whom Germany can boast. While he is thus particularly qualified to speak of Literature as an Art, he has also something to say upon those influences which, outside of his own merits, contribute so much to an author's success, and are so often undervalued when he obtains immediate popularity. Schopenhauer's own sore experiences in the matter of reputation lend an interest to his remarks upon that subject, although it is too much to ask of human nature that he should approach it in any dispassionate spirit.

The Art of Literature illustrated eBook Arthur Schopenhauer Reviews
Schopenhauer lived from 1788 to 1860. His fame came when he was an old man writing to impress others with the benefits of thinking for himself. A hundred years after he died, I was faced with becoming an adult in an electronic age of mass confusion with rapid news cycles. Schopenhauer had high praise for drama setting up human tragedy for awareness of inner over outer life. When Schopenhauer shifts to newspaper writing, I quote
Herein they are like little dogs;
if anything stirs, they immediately
set up a shrill bark. (p. 61).
LBJ twisted enough for my fellow Americans to strike me as victims of a J. F. cave in following 400 centuries of cave art. Even Plato thought philosophers became rare by fleeing the shadows in a cave. Nietzsche knew intellect becomes otherwise in conditions that change. I quote
The extent to which even our intellect
is a product of the conditions of
existence -- we would not have it
if we could live without it, nor would
we have it in this form, if we could
live otherwise. (Will To Power section 498).
He has a way with words!
